Thanks Dave, for a breathtaking look at Wisconsin weather this beautiful evening in Oakland. Awesome.
I have never seen lightening quite like this. It appears to come from (go to?) a patch of clear blue sky. Dave, please tell us more about this very cool shot! Looks like 10 seconds at f4.0, so you used a tripod, and probably tried many times. Anything else to share?
The weather last night was the strangest I’ve seen in a long time. I don’t think I’ve ever seen clouds move like that. David – great shot!
Thanks Jim, The shot was taken on a tripod with a setting on the Canon 20d to allow the shutter to be open until it had enough light for a good exposure. This only works after dark. I do this so the chance of the shutter being open when there is a lightning stike is increased. I took 297 shoots of the storm as it aproached, with no success. and about 125 shoots as the storm moved away. This shoot was in that group. As much as I like this shoot, I missed a better one that happened between exposures. It had six of the same kind of fingers, all comming from a center spot. Glad you like it. You got to get lucky once in a while.
Wicked cool. Over 400 shots to get this one. Persistence pays! Nice work.
Great photo! I’m the author of a weather book ‘Extreme Weather’ and friend of Jim and Kelly Pire. I’m working on a new edition of the book and would like to use this photo. Please contact me at:
