We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat

It’s been a long time since I put anything on my wish list, so here it is. A lens to die for. Or at least to die lugging around. “No news on price, availability or weight yet.”

In the “Studio” with thedude

My dear friend Jack has an impressive collection of vintage Leica gear that he’ll be selling on Ebay. He asked if I’d take a few shots of the four cameras and six lenses. Of course, I immediately accepted the challenge, and rushed off to my studio, which in this case consisted of a wooden place mat on the sofa, my D2X with 60 mm macro lens on a tripod and a small reflector for the flash.

By the way, the gear is in excellent+ condition if you’re interested. I’ll include a link to his sale on ebay as soon as he gets it up.

Size Doesn’t Matter…

2405.jpgWhat matters is how BIG it is.

There are many great things to say about this new configuration. I still have a vertically oriented monitor for browsing and working on portrait-oriented documents. (That’s just about everything, right?) In addition, I now have a huge, brilliant canvas for displaying and editing images. I briefly considered a three monitor configuration, but realized that if I did you and my wife would finally know for sure that I had flipped my lid. Instead, I now use the 17″ in the bedroom as a TV.

All these new pixels are nice to have, but the best thing about my new Dell 2405 monitor is it’s color. I have never seen whiter whites on an LCD display. I actually had to adjust my monitor gamma down a bit. And the colors are so smooth – not the least bit “grainy” like on some LCD’s. It even puts my relatively new 2001FP to shame. The built-in CF card reader will come in handy too. Nice!

Click on the image above to see an image sized perfectly for the 2405′s native resolution – 1920 x 1200 pixels. Wow!

All of this has me wondering how I’ll adjust my work flow. The vertically-oriented monitor is essential, but the new monitor just looks so much better. Another question I’m wrestling with is whether or not to increase the default size of the images on my blog. Most images are 1200 pixels wide now. But this blog is primarily for me, right? I want my images to look great here at home. I guess you should not be surprised if my default image size creeps up to 1920 pixels wide. Hey – it could be worse. I could have picked up an Apple 30-inch dsplay!

Quiet Computer Case on Steriods

quiet_case.jpgI hate to admit it, but really do want this thing. It’s sooo geeky – so beautiful! I’ve been lusting after it half the day. What makes it so appealing – aside from its thick, throbbing manliness – is that it’s a completely silent PC case. The case contains exactly zero fans and works with today’s high-end processors. Seventy seven pounds of aluminum heat sink with casters rated to support four tons. Whoa – how cool is that? hehe.

Unfortunately, my current motherboard is not listed on their very short list of compatible boards. Hmmm… I could always upgrade… I wonder what the wife would say. :)

It’s Here!

macmini1.jpgFour days ahead of schedule. Those very clever folks at Apple know how to make my day. The best thing though, has been Kelly’s reaction. She totally loves it!

The funny thing is that the things she loves the most are all things she could have done on her PC for the last 2 years. She launched iTunes and squealed, “You mean I never have to buy another CD!?” Next it was iCal. “Oh look , I can add everything to my calendar!” And she LOVES Stickies. Sheesh! Even though she hasn’t found a single thing that she could not do with her humble Dell box, she loves it to death.

From this moment on, when someone asks me what kind of computer to buy, I’ll say, “Get a Mac!”

Another Brilliant Idea From Apple

airtunes_anim.gifOnce again the designers at Apple have come up with a must-have toy. Their new AirPort incorporates some way cool features. Among them – the ablity to stream music from iTunes to this wireless device which then connects to your stereo. Check it out! It’s already on my wish-list. I can finally stream music to my bedroom! I’m sure Kelly will be thrilled! NOT!

4 Gigabyte Microdrive for $250

Hey, I tried this and it worked flawlessly. I can now store over 4,400 images on my D70 at the basic setting – 448 images in the highest quailty (RAW+JPEG) setting. WOW! This saved me $250 over the cost of the bare microdrive.

Guess this explains all of the empty MuVo shells for sale on E-Bay. :-)

Still on My Wish-List :-)

This little silent PC is even more appealing now that they’ve announced an ATX version.

Oh yeah, and don’t forget these.

Wish List Item Number 6

ipod.jpgI should not even need to mention this, but just to be perfectly clear… Of course I want an iPod!

Doesn’t everyone?

UPDATE: My truly wonderful wife bought me a 30 gig iPod for my birthday! Woo-hoo! (Now I just need that Mac laptop…)

Wish List Item Number 5

Here it is! The digital camera I’ve been dreaming about. Along with blistering speed and high resolution, this beauty can upload images to my network wirelessly – even while shooting! A major breakthrough – I want it now! After looking at the incredible 360 degree VR’s in my last post, I want to get started on my own as soon as possible! (Of course, that will require a fancy fisheye lens, but that’s a wish list item for another day.)

Hint: My birthday is in September. Are you listening Kelly? :-)
