Kids Say the Darndest Things
While driving home from dinner tonight at Luka’s Tap Room, I discovered that there’s a punk club one block from our loft. So, naturally, I grabbed my camera and went after some images.
Tonight’s alcohol-free event looks like so much fun I might have to go back after dark to shoot the dingy club in all its goth glory, because despite the tone of the meticulously screened poster, these charming and very polite kids just don’t seem threatening enough by the light of day.
Love Electronic Music?
Check out this incredible site. I’ve been listening to DI’s Chillout stream for a couple years now. This site does an impressive job at describing what “chillout” is as well as a myriad of other musical genres and provides links to mp3 streams as well. Thanks Tobias, for the tip!

One in a Billion?
Luckily for us, our good friend Grant is a cousin of one the world’s most gifted musicians. With Grant’s help, we were able to score five seats in the second row at the resplendent Davies Symphony Hall for last night’s performance by Cliburn winner Jon Nakamatsu. I simply do not have words to describe the skill and talent displayed by Mr. Nakamatsu. I could say the performance was stunning, incredible and beautiful, but that doesn’t really give you any idea of what it’s like to see him play live – especially backed by Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony. This is truly one of the world’s rarest of gifts. Bravo!!

Who’s Your Buddy?
The highlight of last night’s show at the scenc Mountain Winery was definitely the 90 minute performance by Buddy Guy. Our buddies Paul and Joanne drove more than two hours for the performance, which was fabulous. Even at 67 years old, Mr. Guy wowed the crowd with spellbinding guitar licks and vocals. The main attraction was Los Lobos, but I think everyone felt like we did – that they should have opened for Buddy Guy.
I needed a nap after work this evening before I could summon the energy to blog. Sometimes I think I’m getting too old for these late nights. Nah…

No Cameras Allowed!
This is why I don’t have any pictures to show you from last night’s Aimee Mann concert at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga. What a bummer! I mean, I was more interested in taking shots of the winery and its lovely setting than of Aimee Mann. Anyway, that’s how I felt before I saw Ms. Mann. She really was beautiful, and our seats were perfect – 12 rows back, dead center. Glad I remembered the binoculars.
I had been a bit skeptical about the show, but Aimee and her teriffic band delivered. She has an amazing voice, and her band was first-rate. They seemed to be having a good time on stage, and obliged the enthusiastic crowd with two encores. The weather was perfect, the stars were out, the sound was excellent – what a great show!
Tonight I’m working on more images of my company’s offices. This series shots were taken in two of our offices in Santa Clara and in our Emeryville Office. They’ll be used on our intranet site and extremely high resolution versions will be printed large and hung on the walls of conference rooms at remote offices.

Afro Celt Sound System at Stern Grove
This afternoon Jim and Kelly and more than 10,000 of our best friends attended a free concert in Stern Grove – one of San Francisco’s most excellent parks. The intimate park features a natural ampitheater where they have been holding free Sunday concerts for 66 years. Kelly and I jumped at the chance to see the Afrocelts Sound System for free. They’ve been a favorite of ours ever since Jonathan played them for us a couple years ago.
Today’s concert was blessed with perfect weather – warm sun, cool breezes. It was so nice that we didn’t even mind the two warm-up acts which turned out to be pretty lame. The Afrocelts, on the other hand were really excellent. Neither of us wanted them to stop playing. I definitely want to see them again – indoors next time.
We had such a nice time that we’re already making plans to gather a few thousand friends and see War on August 17th. Hope to see you there!

The Best for Last?
We decided to spend Kerry’s last evening with our dear friends Chris and Ben. Ben was kind enough to prepare a splendid Thai dinner for all of us. As always, it was totally delicious. After dinner we watched a huge fireworks display (the anual KFOG KABOOM!) from the balcony of Chris and Ben’s home.
Later, Chris and Kerry checked out some of the rarest books in the Burt library. With surprisingly little coaxing from all of us, Kerry performed songs from a book containing a compilation of the magazines from the 1848 printing of Bodey’s Ladies Book as well as a couple from an 1852 publication entitled The Ladies Wreath. It was awesome to hear these songs performed and to be transported instantly to another age. Ben was totally smitten by Kerry’s beautiful singing voice. Come to think of it, we all were…
Kerry, it was wonderful to see you. You definitely dazzled and amazed us all. I hope you always remember your first California visit fondly, and come back soon! Jim, Kelly and Orion will keep the door open for you.
Once again, you can find more pictures of Kerry’s California trip here.
