OK – I’ve been feeling kinda bad. My pal Jim visited for a week, and, despite great conversation, great weather and meals at places like Haven, Sea Salt and of course Chop Bar, I took a grand total of one photograph. With a cheap-ass point-and-click. I guess it could have been worse – I could have used a cell phone. There’s no excuse for this.

I was stumped at what to do, and Jim solved the dilemma by posting a really amazing shot of a few of the more than 50 orchids he has blossoming in his kitchen right now. In Madison Wisconsin. In January. I find this amazing. There is absolutely zero chance of me ever being capable of creating anything even remotely like this. I’m in awe.

It was great to hang with you, Dude. Always enlightening in so many ways.

There isn’t a lot I can say here that hasn’t been said far more eloquently by Bruce’s friends and family, so I’ll let the images do most of the talking. Kelly and I laughed out loud while looking at these. We hope you will too.

You were a big part of the fondest memory of our lives – namely, our honeymoon in Bali. We had such a wonderful time that we returned the following year. You were the perfect host – offering us a room in your cool Bali house and accompanying us on our cross-country journey, where we stayed in the best rooms in the best hotels. These memories will be with us forever.

Think you have enough sunscreen there, Bruce?

Of course, we’ve always appreciated your sense of humor, perfect timing, your instant recall of every line of every Cohen brothers film and Seinfeld episode. You are without doubt one of the funniest and most gracious people we’ve ever had the pleasure to know. I think we have a lot in common as well. We see pretty much eye-to-eye politically speaking. We’re Geek brothers under the skin. And then there’s our relationship with food… Anyone up for Dessert?

We hope you and Catharine are having a joyful day filled with love in your Bali paradise. You are truly one-of-a-kind, Bruce. You will live in our hearts and minds forever.

It really was most excellent to finally see you again, Amy. You obviously haven’t lost your terrific smile or your love of life. I’m delighted to hear that you’re doing so well with your business – Pieh Tool Company. I can’t say I know of another woman with her own line of custom tools and anvils! I’m very impressed with what you have accomplished entirely on your own. It seems like your hard work is finally paying off. You go girl!

I look forward to our next brunch together. Let’s not wait another 15 years, ok?

Thanks Tom and Julie, for including us in your trip fabulous food-filled trip up nort’. The whole weekend was fabulous. Steaks on the grill, shopping in Mendo… But that meal at Cafe Beaujolais was one of the most memorable ever. Awesome.

Shrove Tuesday

You never know what you’ll find at Andrew and Jeri’s. On the menu this Shrove Tuesday were tasty crepes and creepy bugs. The crepes were delicious of course, but the bug turned out to be the coolest thing when we saw what it looks like under under black light. Evidently, all scorpions do this. Who knew? Bug Lady did! Warmest Day of the Year

Jim Rowe’s visit is coinciding with some spectacular Bay Area weather. The high temperature in Oakland was only in the upper 50′s, but in the warm sun it felt like 75. Perfect weather for oysters on the pier at the Lake Chalet.

Later, we went up to Skyline Ranch to visit with Kelly and Bandit.
