Our White Christmas

I was not looking forward to driving 5 hours to Shaver Lake to be held prisoner in a cabin in the snow, but that’s not how it turned out at all. The holiday I dread the most turned out to be more than tolerable this year. At times, it was actually fun.

The food and family stuff was fun and the cabin turned out to be a nice roomy house, but the icing on the cake came in the form of a foot of powdery snow. Beautiful!!

More fabulous photos here.

Wrong Place, Right Time

This rainbow peaked while I was on the Embarcadero in the city on my way to the top floor of the Transamerica Pyramid. The shot might have been better from almost any other vantage point – assuming that a rainbow was actually visible from any other vantage point. This beauty lasted all of two minutes.

Interesting how the rainbow is in front of the bridge.

Introducing Bandit

Kelly’s childhood dream finally comes true!

Accompanied by their official photographer, Kelly and Bandit took a short ride on this sunny, 70 degree day. Looks like Bandit and Kelly are getting along splendidly.

Many thanks to the great folks at Xenophon Therapeutic Riding for all of the support. Without your help, this would not have been possible. Also, I’d like give a HUGE thanks to our friends Hannah and Pooh, who have been amazingly helpful.

Best “Thanks For Shopping” Letter Ever

Kelly received this after buying a bridle for Bandit this afternoon.

Thank you from Action Rider Tack!

Today your order was lovingly removed from our shelves by Julie, our Product Specialist, and placed into our velvet-lined wheelbarrow.

Our 5-member equine team, headed by Royale Rouge, inspected your items to make sure they were in the best possible condition before mailing.

Stephanie, our Ordering Specialist, rang a bell and a hush fell over the barn as Dee, our Shipping Specialist, placed your items into the finest corrugated box that money can buy.

We all had a wonderful celebration afterward and our entire team waved goodbye to your package, on its way to you in our private A.R.T. jet.

I hope you had a wonderful time shopping with us at Action Rider Tack. We certainly did. We wish we had a picture of you and your horse to hang on our wall as “Customer of the Week” and to add to our website photo gallery. We’re all exhausted but can’t wait for you to come back to ACTION RIDER TACK.

Happy Trails!

Finally – a Decent Campaign Ad

In light of all the mud-slinging and negative ads we’ve endured in the past couple of months, this is just wonderful.

The only thing that could’ve made the ad better is if they’d have hired Will Lyman to do the voice-over.

Light Painting

I was motivated to take a few shots during a 6 – 1/2 hour power outage last night. I figured the unusual lighting might produce some interesting results. I brought along a flashlight so I could see where I was walking, and figured it might be fun to try and do add drama to my time-exposures by painting in a some light.

Ion Torrent West

I feel extraordinarily lucky to be working with these fabulous folks every day — without a doubt, the best team I’ve ever worked with. It’s truly amazing what you can accomplish with the right group of people.

Fleet Week

A three block long line at the ferry was giving us second thoughts about our plan to go to the city to see the Blue Angels. We were about to pack it in when Kelly suggested we try to get on the sold-out Potomac for what we heard is absolute best view of the show. As luck would have it, there were two cancellations, and we were aboard for a spectacular afternoon on the San Francisco Bay!

We’ve seen these pilots perform several times, but the show still gives us goose bumps. The sound, the power and the ridiculously precise formations are awe-inspiring.

My New Favorite Lens

Steve has an 85mm f1.4 Nikkor lens for sale. I’d love to own it, but even used, this is one expensive lens! This led me into a search for alternatives, which led me to an entire Flickr group devoted to this interesting lens. I was impressed that these beautiful images were made with this amazingly cheap lens, so I decided to pick one up.

I’ve had the lens for just a few hours, and I’m already very impressed by the bokeh. To me, it looks as good as that from lenses costing five times as much. Interestingly, it seems that that the smooth bokeh makes the in-focus parts of the image appear even sharper than they actually are. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not suggesting that this lens isn’t sharp – it is! It already seems like the best lens bargain I’ve ever found.

Las Vegas

We took a mini-vacation to celebrate a couple of Virgo birthdays. I was too lazy to drag my heavy camera around much, but I did shoot this 12 image panorama of Kellster, Jeff and Wendy at the beautiful Parasol Down at the Wynn.
