Reconnecting – Again

Many of you know of my never-ending scanning project. Well, the scope of the task expanded this afternoon. Through the miracle of the Internets, my old friend Erik Larsen found a photo I shot of a cabin he built near Thule Greenland. You can view this image both on the Panaramio web site and on Google Earth. I was inspired to post it because it was at the time one of the northernmost images on the planet. When I uploaded the shot, I hoped Erik and others who have been to this remarkable place would see it, but I rather doubted that they would. Well, amazingly enough, Erik found the image and e-mailed me. Now I’ve been chatting with Erik from his home in Copenhagen all afternoon.

This upshot is that I now have to sift through and scan a pile of slides and negatives taken during my 17 months in Thule. Luckily, there aren’t as many of these as there are shots from my youth in Wisconsin, but now that I have located one friend from my tour in Thule, it probably won’t be long before I reconnect with others.

This Internet thing is pretty cool. You know – I think it may catch on!

Anyway, today’s shot was taken at one of the Danish barracks – maybe number 204, which later burned to the ground. (Yes, I have pictures of that too.) I was lucky to have been befriended by this group of wild and crazy dudes. Although I don’t remember all of their names, I do remember faces and what some of them did while in Thule. Erik (lower right) ran the base woodworking shop. Access to lumber is part of what enabled him to build his amazing cabin. Looks like this shot was made at a gathering of a little organization we called “Tyyynde Skiver”. Loosely translated, this means “thinly sliced”, which was a highly complimentary way of describing items of high quality – especially if they were related in some way to the female anatomy – a topic hot on the minds of the men on base, who outnumbered women by at least 20 to 1. (It wasn’t all bad though, there were a few fine Danish and American girls on base.)

I Don’t Do Weddings

However, I will make an exception for Antonio Piccolboni! He’s been a huge fan of my photography for five years, a terrific coworker and friend. I could not turn him down.

Antonio and Maria were married in a charming Quaker ceremony in a spectacular amphitheater at the Berkeley Botanical Gardens. Congratulations, Antonio and Maria!

What, Me Worry?

Thanks to all of you for pointing out that the Smart Car was recently shown to perform quite well in crash tests. I’m happy to hear it, but safety was never much of an issue when I made the decision to purchase the car. After all, I drove a far more dangerous motorcycle for 15 of my wildest years and survived.

In this shot, you can see Jeff and me screaming down highway 36 at over 100 miles per hour. The speedometer is pegged. Look closely at the rear-view mirror, and you’ll see that our shirts are wide open, and we’re not wearing helmets. I’ll bet we’re both in shorts, too. I remember how difficult it was to keep the camera from blowing out of my hands when I leaned over to take this shot. Crazy? Yes.

My point is that I/we take risks every day. Just riding a bicycle or walking across the street in Oakland could be fatal. If I was really concerned about my health and safety, I might try harder to lose the twenty fifty extra pounds I’m carrying around, or drink less than a bottle of wine per day. So, I’ll continue to drive my little car with a huge smile on my face not worrying too much about safety – especially after the encouraging crash test results!

San Pablo Ave

Some scenes form my morning commute. The sunny side of San Pablo Avenue is loaded with photo opportunities. Grand Openings are everywhere. I like the sign that reads, “24 pieces CHICKEN just only $9.50″.

This proves once again that a series of photos of ANYTHING can be at least mildly interesting when displayed as a group. I’ll add to this series as soon as possible.

What I Like about WordPress

OK – I’ve had a couple weeks of quality time with my new blogging software, and there are some things about it I like better than my old favorite.

  • It seems a bit easier to use than that other blogging software.
  • Pages are rendered more quickly. (This is a surprise!)
  • Searches are much faster. (Yay.)
  • WordPress styles are easy to drop in.
  • The Visual editor is quite good. (I don’t use it though.)

The list of things I don’t like is shorter.

  • I’m having difficulty running php code in Templates.
  • Publishing via e-mail is broken. (Although a fix is promised soon.)

The bottom line is that I’d definitely recommend WordPress to anyone who isn’t already blogging. If you’re already a friend of thedude, I can set you up in a few minutes, or you can skip some of the geeky stuff and become one of the more than 3,000,000 bloggers currently blogging on the WordPress site. Either way, thedude says, “Get blogging!”

This is Not Kelly’s Car!

My new car is so much fun to drive, she may never give me the keys!

As one of the 30,000 people who put $99 down on a Smart Car in advance of their U.S. debut, I never thought I’d actually buy one. But then it showed up at the dealership, configured exactly as I had ordered it on line, I figured, what the heck, I’ll go check it out. Well, it just took one look and I was hooked. Not only is it hilariously cute, but it’s a blast to drive – especially with the top down! The car is still rare enough to cause a sensation everywhere it goes. I spend almost as much time describing the car to strangers as I do driving it. What fun!

Thanks, Kelly and Bailey, for modeling so obligingly. Now, can I have my keys back – please? :)

Solari!

It sure was great to see you! We wish you all the luck in the world with your twin boys. Jack and Cole are lucky to have you and Neil as parents. And don’t worry, you will always look great to us – Fred Flintstone feet and all.

One Way

I noticed the two homes painted in exactly the same shade of green on San Pablo during my walk. I wondered about that until I saw the sign. Obviously, there was only one way to paint it.
