My coworker found this this very clever web site which offers a completely new way to view web sites. The image on the left is a representation of thedude.com. The colors indicate different structural elements - violet for images, blue for links, red for tables, (I have to get rid of that one table!) and so on. It’s cool and informative - I suggest you give it a spin.

I finished the third in my series of large panoramic shots for my building. I have to say that I’m somewhat jealous. This print is my best - I wish it was on my floor! I guess it’s true that practice makes perfect.
I’d like to thank the Fourth Street Lofts Homeowners Association for having faith in my work and for allowing me to experiment with these super-large prints. I hope it’s just the beginning of something really huge. :)

I can’t believe that a whole year has passed since the last Carnaval Parade in San Francisco. This year’s event must have been the largest ever. The parade lasted nearly four hours.
I had planned to put a few shots up and link the rest into some sort of photo album, but after looking at the images for a few hours, decided instead to give them all to you here at full resolution. They are just too stunning IMHO, to be viewed at anything but the maximum resolution your monitor and broadband connection can handle.
UPDATE: I just got linked at the official Carnaval San Francisco web site. It’ll be interesting to see how much new traffic this generates! :)

I wasn’t sure about my choice of lens and the decision to carry along my flash, but it turns out that a decent quality zoom lens and flash are the perfect combination for an event such as this. I used a Nikkor 28-85 f2.8 and a Nikon SB-800 flash for all but the last few shots.

At this point I decided to take a few shots with my Sigma 80-400 mm lens. No flash.

So, you say you’d like your digital images to look like these. It’s easy! Here’s how.
- Get your hands on the finest digital camera you can buy and a few accessories - a couple lenses and a good flash should do.
- Attend the most colorful and lovely event imaginable on a perfect day in San Francisco.
- Set the camera for high quality and low contrast. Set the flash to fill, 1/3 of a stop underexposed.
- Point the camera in the right direction, push the button.
- Repeat.
- Call on your 15 years of PhotoShop experience to select, color-correct, sharpen, resize and otherwise perfect the 10 gigabytes of image data you captured.
- Upload the results to your blog.
Simple!

My recent visit to the Oakland Fox Theater was very interesting. I saw first hand what nearly 40 years of neglect will do to a building. The photos below look better than the building does “in person”.

The shots below give a clue to the condition of the walls and the plaster pretty much throughout the entire building.

Below, you can get an idea of scale of the work that needs to be done on the ceiling which is larger than a football field. If you look closely at the upper left-hand corner of the image on the left below, you can just make out Andrew working in the corner.

We try to see the KFOG KaBoom every year. We normally drive into the city, but decided to avoid the hundreds of thousands on Fogheads in the city and instead watched the fireworks display with a musical soundtrack at the nearby Middle Harbor Shoreline Park - the best park noboby knows about. The KaBoom is California’s largest fireworks display - it really is awesome. If you’d like to see a Quicktime movie of 14,000 pounds of fireworks set off to music, click here. (66 megabytes)

We expected thousands of people, but only a few hundred showed up. The wind was chilly, but the wine helped keep us warm. The moon must have been jealous because it made a grand entrance immediately after the show ended. Lovely!

We were lucky to have a few hours with our most excellent friend Olive. It was a lovely evening, so we took a short walk with Olive and her somewhat spastic dog, Frisco, to Ben and Jerry’s in beautiful Jack London Square.

Yes, she ate the whole thing.
