Napa Wine Train and Parental Units

Published: July 31st, 2004

We celebrated Mother’s Day and Father’s Day a bit late today by treating Kelly’s parents to lunch in the “Vista Dome” car on board the Napa Valley Wine Train. Despite a hint of cheesiness, the train is fun, and the food quite delicious.

An Auspicious Occasion

Evidently, in some parts of the world, today is System Administrator Appreciation Day!

Here’s your big chance to show some love for your hard-working and under-appreciated SysAdmin. (See the excellent gift ideas section.)

One of These Days, I’m Just Gonna Do It!

Published: July 28th, 2004

I’m going to change the look of my blog. Just a bit - nothing too radical. One thing is for sure though - I’m gong to make some sort of cheesy banner featuring a 20 year old picture of myself. If Carl can get away with it, so can I.

You have been warned.

I think I may have found it. (Thanks Julie!)

I’ve been Working

Published: July 26th, 2004

In case you wonder why I don’t make blog entries every single day, it’s partly because I do actually have a life outside of my blog. (It’s true!) It’s also because I occasionally take time to work on one of my other web sites.

Upgrade Coming Soon - Maybe

Published: July 24th, 2004

OK, I did it. I bought the latest version of Movable Type. Idecided to do it it for a few reasons. First, because I believe it’s a great piece of software. I’ve been using it pretty much every day for more than a year now and I think it’s worth way more than a hundred bucks. If it helps keep the folks at SixApart innovating, then it’s money well-spent. Second, because I want to change the look of my site a tiny bit. It is my impression that MT 3.0 will make this a bit easier to do. Third, MT 3.0 offers tools to help reduce blog spam. The most effective anti-blog-spam measure would require commenters to obtain a key from the TypeKey site. Visitors to my blog would not be able to leave a comment without first obtaining a key. I’m not crazy about the idea, and have not decided yet whether to implement it. It’s a shame that the world is the way it is, but if the blog spamming continues, I may not have a choice in the matter.

More on all of this soon.

Learning Movable Type. This looks useful too.

To Upgrade or Not to Upgrade?

Published: July 23rd, 2004

OK, I am seriously considering upgrading to MovableType version 3.0. In the process, I’ll probably change the look of my blog to something more like this. I really like the narower browser-centered view. Unfortunately, to accommodate my images, I would have to make the content area of my blog somewhat wider, which will probably make the overall effect less appealing visually.

Hmmm… What to do?

It’s Wish List Time Again!

The first item for 2004 is this fabulous luggage cart. My friend Grant has one. It’s very light and compact due to its excellent design, and super sturdy.
