Sleepless in Santa Rosa

Published: February 29th, 2004

We drove to Santa Rosa yesterday because I had to work on another computer. (The story of my life.) As it turned out, the trip was very worthwhile. My “client” gave me four(!) fabulous cases of wine in return for tuning up his Linux server. Thanks Neil!!

Kelly’s high school classmate Steve and his girlfriend Debra live in Santa Rosa, so we stopped by to see Debra’s charming new home. Debra’s house is in a great neighborhood built in the early fifties. I was reminded of the house I lived in during my early teens in Burlington, Wisconsin. Comfy.

As usual, entertainment was provided by Steve throughout the evening’s activities, which included dinner at a popular microbrewery and several bottles of old vine zinfandel. Thanks Steve and Debra! My face still hurts from all the smiling and laughing.

Don’t get me wrong - it’s absolutely wonderful to see the two of you again - even though it’s been just SIX DAYS since we saw you in Fresno…

One of the world’s foremost authorities on Indonesia, the always lovely and vivacious Ben, the world’s authority on extreme weather and the world’s number one wife - all in the same shot! The occasion was a dinner to celebrate Bill Dalton’s sale of his home in Chico and his permanent move to Bali. Best of luck, Bill! See you next year!

Film vs. Digital - Results Are In!

Published: February 15th, 2004

OK, there is simply no comparison between the 4 megapixel digital images from my Canon G3 and the images I shot with my dusty old Nikon 35 mm camera.

The scanned 35 mm slides display more accurate color, wider dynamic range, no digital artifacts, and offer a full 60 million pixels to play with. They film images seem to have more depth, and can easily be printed at 24 x 36 inches and more.

Also, the clunky camera gear actually inspired me to try to shoot better images. Interesting… Maye I should just buy a new-fangled auto-focus film camera. After looking at digital camera prices, film cameras seem incredibly cheap!

I’m adding the film images to my Lake Tahoe Ofoto album now.

Tahoe Trippin’

My Lake Tahoe film vs. digital experiment is over. It looks like digital photography is the hands-down winner - at least in terms of speed and convenience. I have been home almost two days now, and I still have no film photos to show for my considerable efforts. Dragging the bulky film camera around was a pain. And more than once after taking a shot with the 35 mm camera, I hunted for the preview button so I could gauge my exposure. Oh well.
