Do Nothing Day

So we spent our Saturday doing (almost) nothing – and it was beautiful. We both loved it! Of course, that does not excuse me from my resposibility to post something to my blog! Guess it’s time to drag out another old image and call it Photo of the Day!

I shot this 180 dgeree panorama of Kelly admiring the kilometer wide Halema`uma`u crater – part of the Kilauea Caldera on the big island of Hawaii in September 2001. Also on this trip, Kelly managed to take the worst picture ever taken of of thedude. (Hey, it was my birthday, and I may have had one too many pina colladas.) I grabbed the camera from her and got much better results. I suppose you’re gonna say that this is due to superior subject matter. Ha!

Any guess as to where one of the world’s largest calderas (45 X 30 miles) is located? Hint: it’s one of my favorite places, it’s an active volcano (possibly a super volcano) and it’s located in North America. Cindy

    Yellowstone! See: http://www.nps.gov/hfc/carto/PDF/YELLmap2.pdf

The purple dotted line, on the map, is the appr. boundry of the caldera. It takes up over half of the park and is the reason why there are so many spectacular geysers and other thermal features!

Wow, nice map! I have never been to Yellowstone. Maybe next year…

This gives a nice explaination of a super volcano and how enormous the eruptions are:

PS – get a load of the ash field from past eruptions (in the graphic which is about half way down the page) compared to the ash field at Mt. St. Helens…….
